Celebrate NC Surfing History – June 19th to 21st

Join us for an unforgettable weekend on Bald Head Island as we dive into the rich and vibrant history of surfing in North Carolina. Hosted by the Old Baldy Foundation, this event will showcase how surfing became a beloved part of our coastal culture. Enjoy exciting events, family-friendly activities, and opportunities to hear from passionate historians and surfers who have shaped the surfing scene in the state.

 

Weekend Highlights

Thursday, June 19th, 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM

• Double Feature Movie at Old Baldy Lighthouse (FREE)

  • Surf’s Up (8:00 PM – 9:30 PM)

  • Endless Summer (9:30 PM – 11:00 PM)
    Location: Old Baldy Lighthouse
    Kick off the weekend with a classic surf movie double-feature under the stars at the iconic Old Baldy Lighthouse. Whether you're a surf enthusiast or new to the sport, this event is free and will set the stage for a weekend of waves, legends, and fun.

 

Friday, June 20th, 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM

• Special Edition Historic Happy Hour at Bald Head Association

Join us for an evening of history and drinks as we host Christopher Bickford, author of Legend of the Sandbar. Enjoy a lively discussion of the book’s insights into North Carolina’s surfing heritage and how the sport’s history intertwines with the local culture.

 

Saturday, June 21st, 11AM - 9 PM

• Children’s Activities at Old Baldy Lighthouse, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Bring the whole family for fun, hands-on activities! Children can enjoy tie-dyeing, making parasols, and crafting sailor’s hats—perfect for creating lasting memories while learning about the island’s surfing history.

• Surfing Exhibit at Bald Head Association, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Dive deeper into the history of North Carolina’s surf culture with this engaging exhibit. Discover fascinating stories, rare artifacts, and photographs showcasing the evolution of surfing along our coast.

• Luau at the Shoals Club, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Wrap up your Saturday with an unforgettable evening at the Shoals Club!​
Experience island vibes, traditional Hawaiian entertainment by Aloha Ka’naka O Hula Halau, and enjoy a delicious buffet dinner surrounded by the spirit of the surf. It’s the ultimate surf-inspired celebration to end the day!
