  • Preservation

We undertake comprehensive restoration projects and ongoing maintenance to ensure the longevity of the Old Baldy Lighthouse and the museum's extensive collection. This includes structural repairs, conservation of historical artifacts, and regular upkeep to maintain the lighthouse’s operational integrity and the condition of our exhibits. Our preservation efforts are aimed at protecting these vital components of Bald Head Island’s heritage for future generations, ensuring that the lighthouse remains a beacon of history and the museum's collection continues to tell the island's story.

  • Education

We offer a range of educational experiences designed to immerse visitors in the rich history of our region. Our Lighthouse Learners Program annually brings over 1,000 fourth graders from across North Carolina to the Old Baldy Lighthouse for an educational experience tailored to young learners. In addition, we offer an island-wide history tour that provides a broader context of the region's past to school groups and other visitors.

  • Community Engagement

We host a diverse array of events to bring together community members and visitors. These include "Historic Happy Hour" with special guest speakers, the annual BHI Fourth of July Golf Cart Parade and more. By collaborating with local organizations and cultural groups, we foster shared experiences that celebrate and preserve our collective heritage. These initiatives enhance community involvement, strengthen local ties, and ensure that Bald Head Island's history and culture remain vibrant and meaningful.

1983: A New Beginning for Bald Head Island

In 1983, George and Cynthia Mitchell's family embarked on a transformative journey by forming Bald Head Island Limited. Their vision led to the purchase of Bald Head Island, marking the start of a new chapter for this picturesque locale. This bold acquisition set the stage for a future filled with preservation and growth.
